This remarkable book presents by far the most expert, detailed
information of Satsuki bonsai of any book. It is hard to imagine
that we will ever need another book on the subject.
If you haven’t had the pleasure of growing satsuki bonsai, don’t
wait! They are as delightfully brilliant and beautiful as any plant on earth.
And they take to bonsai culture like fish to water.
Bob Callaham provides us with something never before seen in English; a complete
celebration of satsuki, rich with photographs, how-to instructions, fascinating
facts, and an unrivaled encyclopedia of over 1,600 cultivars (this alone is
worth the book’s price). All of this adds up to a rare treasure indeed.
After receiving a doctorate in botany from the University of California at
Berkeley, Robert Z. Callaham undertook a 50-year professional career. He began
as a forest geneticist and worked for 14 years as an international consultant
on forestry research. In these capacities, he authored nearly 100 publications
on forestry and related subjects.
He is currently the newsletter editor for the East (San Francisco) Bay Bonsai
Society and the Bay Area Satsuki Aikokai, a club that specializes in satsuki
bonsai. Bob has an impressive collection of satsuki azaleas and has written
numerous articles on growing, styling, and displaying bonsai.
